How "near me" works for accounting in NZ

Most NZ tax work is now done through cloud accounting platforms (Xero, MYOB Business, QuickBooks Online — all three are IRD-listed for direct GST and payday filing). The result is that an accounting firm's physical location matters far less than it did ten years ago. Year-end accounts, GST returns, IR3 and IR4 filing and most advisory work can be done remotely with monthly reconciliation in the cloud.

Where location still matters is in three situations:

• Discovery and engagement meetings. Many clients prefer a first meeting in person. Lynch covers Auckland in person and the rest of NZ by video call (Zoom or Teams) or scheduled travel for advisory engagements.
• IRD audit defence and field visits. When IRD attends a client site for an inspection, the accountant attending too is a material support. Lynch attends in Auckland and travels for clients elsewhere when the engagement justifies it.
• Restructure and succession workshops. Multi-stakeholder restructure conversations work better face to face. Lynch travels to client locations for these.

For everything else — annual compliance, GST, PAYE, FBT, business advisory, cash-flow planning — the cloud-accounting model means a Chartered Accountant 600 kilometres away is no slower than one across town.
